What is a multi spindle? advantages and disadvantages

Multi Spindle

Multi-spindles are devices that are capable of drilling, tapping and reaming multiple holes of different diameters and positions simultaneously on a workpiece.

In many industrial factories and workshops, each of the above steps is performed on the holes one by one; This causes errors in the work and inequality of the produced parts. This method is justified for low-volume production. By using multi-spindle machines, we can prevent human errors and produce parts in a shorter time. For example, using a 4-axis multi-spindle, a part with 4 holes can be drilled in one step with less manpower and much faster speed.

Multi-spindle applications in industry

Multi-spindle machines are used in various parts workshops and factories for the purpose of drilling electrodes or nuts; In each workshop or factory, according to the type and condition of the desired part and holes, a special multi-spindle machine should be used. The automotive industry in our country is currently considered as one of the most important markets for the use of multi-spindle devices due to the increasing growth of this industry and the high circulation of required parts.

Benefits of multi spindles

Accuracy and quality in machining

Machining in different positions and in the shortest time

Possibility of tapping with different steps

Lubrication without disassembly

Multi-disc machining with the necessary power and speed

Increase production efficiency (depends on the number of holes in a part, and the greater the number of holes in the part, the more effective the machine will be in increasing production speed)

Reducing energy consumption

Man power reduction

Waste reduction due to no machining error

Disadvantages of multi spindle:

High initial production cost (because a separate multi-spindle has to be designed and built for each part)

Stopping the production line due to machine failure

Types of multi-spindles

Multi-spindles are produced in two general types, fixed and variable, for different uses, each of which can have multiple axes and can be installed on a variety of column drills, milling machines, special machines, etc.

Variable multi spindles

Variable multi-spindles are produced in different sizes, each size is able to perform drilling, tapping and reaming operations in a certain minimum and maximum distance; Each has the minimum and maximum diameter of the tool. Movement of all axes Variable multi-spindles are usually a function of a circle (large circle) that each axis can move around itself (small circle) so that the distance between the axes can be adjusted. The number of axes is two or higher. In the figure below, a small and a large circle is clearly defined.

Fixed multi spindle

In fixed multi-spindles, the distance between the axes is constant. Of course, the tool diameter of the tool shafts can vary according to the map in a limited range. Fixed multi-spindles are designed according to customer needs before construction.
